Another thing that separates this from other mil-sf is the degree to which the characters struggle with ethical as well as strategic and tactical considerations-not just "how do we blow this up" but "is it right that we blow this up?". The characters are deeply developed even some of the minor ones get some nice fleshing-out, and there are numerous interactions that develop that rather than simply advancing the plot, which is always enjoyable. The author does a fantastic job of thoroughly crafting a consistent, detailed, and entertaining universe across the two series, and I enjoyed the "ah, so *that's* what happened back then" moments.Īs in "Theirs Not to Reason Why", "First Salik War" delivers solid military sci-fi mixed with psi in a natural way that carries the story well. If you're one of those who dislike prequels and would rather read in chronological order, start with "The Terrans". This is the final book of the "First Salik War" prequel trilogy to the "Theirs Not to Reason Why" series.
